A DIVINE INSTITUTION
By Charles N. Spence, Jr.
Our society is plagued by a lack of reverence for the first of God's Holy institutions: MARRIAGE. People today think nothing of entering into and out of marriage. Some look at marriage as an appliance they bought from a department store; if it does not work, they take it back for an exchange or a refund. In order for marriage to work it must be God centered. In Genesis 2:18-25 God is tending to the needs of Adam by supplying him with a woman. Those men or women who desire a spouse need to seek God's provision of one. When God is consulted one can be assured that He will provide what is best, beyond one's expectation (Eph. 3:20). The Bible describes marriage "Leaving and cleaving." In this the two become one. "Leaving" is a conscious decision of a man and woman leaving their respective homes with the intent of establishing their own together. "Cleaving" is brought about by an act of consummation or sexual union between husband and wife (1 Cor. 6:16). In this sense, God joins the man and woman. "Therefore what God has joined together let not man put asunder" (Matt. 19:6). If God does the joining then only He can put the marriage asunder, not man. Since God joins or establishes the marriage, He must govern it, if it is going to be successful. Ephesians 5:23-29 gives Gods guidelines for a happy and successful marriage.
If marriage is going to be successful, then God must be the center of it. When people follow His guidelines that govern the relationship, then He is the center of it. Until then, marriages will be destined to failure and souls will be lost consequently.
