SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE:
DOES IT SAY THAT?
By
Charles N. Spence, Jr.
The first amendment under the United
States Constitution says concerning religion, "Congress shall make no law
respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibit the free exercise
thereof." This amendment came because of territorial rule by those who
sought to make their religious faith the dominant one, while remaining
intolerant of others. The government held that each individual's faith was
important enough to protect. Under the Constitution, government would not
impose a religion upon the people, nor would it honor any one religion at the
expense of another. It guaranteed, under the Constitution, that an individual
would not be hindered from worshiping as he pleases.
Today, however, government has ignored
the individual's first amendment right to his faith. The humanist agenda has
reared its ugly head and tainted the government's comprehension of the first
amendment. Somehow, the interpreters of the Constitution have concluded that
the amendment implies a "Separation of Church and State." Such a
conclusion is non sequitur. The premises do not imply that conclusion. If such
a conclusion is allowed to stand, people may find themselves attending
padlocked buildings of worship and without faith to exercise.
Not only has our government prohibited
our free exercise of religion, they have created laws respecting an establishment
of religion: Secular Humanism. Government has allowed and protected the
humanist’s right to teach evolution and sex education in schools, while making
prayer and any other "Christian" act or subject unlawful. Government
has ruled in favor of the pornographers and abortionists, while sentencing our
children to drink from the tainted wells of humanism. Our society has gone back
to the days of
Secular Humanism has crept in unawares;
now it must be met head on by those of strong religious conviction. If we are
still a government of the people, for the people, by the people, let us take
control of our government and aid in the restoration of our fundamental
constitutional rights. Help rid our society of the religious apathy by ridding
our society of the influences of Secular humanism.
